Ingólfur Arnarson
(849-910)
He came to Iceland with his wife Hallveig Frodesdatter and his foster brother Hjörleifur. He established a community in Reykjavík in 874.
Grettir Ásmundarson
(996-1031)
The main character of Grettir's saga. He was brave and temperamental. Legends tell of his many fights in both Iceland and Norway.
Hallgerður Höskuldsdóttir
(930-?)
According to Njál's saga, Hallgerður was a beautiful, quick-tempered woman, involved in an escalating series of tit-for-tat killings.
Erik the Red
(950-1003)
It is believed he founded the first settlement in Greenland. He lived on a farm in Western Iceland and remained a follower of Norse paganism.
Flóki
Vilgerðarson
(830-?)
The third Viking to reach Iceland. He was also the one who gave the country its name. He founded a settlement on the West coast.
Leifur Eiríksson
(980-1020)
An Icelandic explorer who is thought to have been the first European to set foot on North America, half a millennium before Christopher Columbus.

The first Scandinavian to discover Iceland after he was blown off course when heading to the Faroe Islands.
Gaelic monk

There is some archaeological evidence for Irish monks’ settlement in Southern Iceland. They may have been the first settlers of Iceland.
Hjörleifur Hróðmarsson
(845-875)
One of the first settlers of Iceland. After he was killed by his slaves, it is believed he was buried on Hjörleifshöfði hill.
Auður Ketilsdóttir
(834-900)
She captained a ship on its journey to the West of Iceland. There were twenty men under her command, proving that she was well-respected.
Náttfari
(835-?)
He was a crew member who escaped his master, Garðar Svavarsson, and may have become one of the first permanent residents of Iceland.
Garðar Svavarsson
(825-878)
According to the Sagas, he was the second explorer to reach Iceland. He established a small settlement in the North.
